Boston @ Dusk

With both Boston winter teams, Celtics and Bruins, in the playoffs, it seemed as if things may have been to good to be true. The two teams would also come to force game sevens in their playoff series. As if watching both of these teams in the playoffs in similar rounds of the playoffs is not good enough. They both have a win or go home game in their home town. How could you not be jacked up as a sports fan?

Well with all this excitement does come the opportunity of some let down as well. I will say, the Celtics were just a beat up ball club. Going into overtime four times in their first series certainly does not help. What they were able to accomplish was amazing, considering their limited team options. Rondo ripping off triple doubles is just awesome to watch as well. In loosing to the Orlando Magic this Sunday, I had a mixed bag of feelings. Feeling as though they did have a great season, but also let down now that they could not defend their title.

The Bruins well, I was half expecting them to make it to the championship series. They also had a great season, but being in first place and flirting with the top record in the NHL all year long. You do expect more out of that particular team. In going out on Friday May 14 to an underdog team, disappointment lined the faces of the fans on Causeway St.With the day turning into night and the lights out at the Garden until next season. We will have to wade the summer watching the Red Sox, and hoping they do not share the same fate.

Until Next year, keep on dancingAztec Gino

Changing of the Gard-en

The Boston Garden was around for quite some time, 1928-1998, 70 years to be exact. I remember walking up to the balcony seats and feeling like I would fall over if I looked down, the stairs were that steep. Since its demolition, which was a televised event, the Arena has been demolishing the name every couple of years as well. The Boston Globe1 has a slideshow about how many names the Boston Arena has actually gone through or considered. The toughest task of all is coming up with a name Bostonians will appreciate and accept. You can call it the “Garden” but every true fan will say “It’s not the same.” Replacing a legend is never easy and the Garden was larger than life before it was demolished.

A Marathon of a Weekend

by bren on April 20th, 2009 | No Comments »

national anthem @ the gardenJust in case you have not heard, the weekend of April 18 is known as Boston’s Marathon Weekend.  There are conventions all weekend where the runners will get there bag of “goodies” and of course their numbers for the race. The streets of Boylston, Newbury, and of course Lansdown St. are just mobbed with people. If you have to drive into the city of Boston I really do feel bad for you. It makes for quite an exciting sports filled weekend.
If Boston is so lucky, as they are this year, the Red Sox have a home series where they acknowledge the runners, the Celtics are in the playoffs, and have home games as well, and last but not least the Bruins are also making a championship run.

Boston Celtics and Red Sox games on Marathon Weekend 4/18/09I was fortunate enough myself that I was able to go the Celtics game at 12:30 pm and also meet up with my friend for a pre-game meal and a Red Sox game. The pre-game meal was an event for John Hancock employees who would be running in the Boston Marathon on April 20th. My friend is one of those employees and he was nice enough to invite me to the festivities.

With the Celtics game going into overtime I was starting to worry about making the second event on time. Celtics in overtime though, of course I am staying until the end. I am not my Grandfather who happened to leave a certain Boston College game before the end, yeah he missed the Hail Mary Pass by Doug Flutie.  My Grandmother, to this day, still hates him for that. You have to understand my Grandfather though, the man can never sit still and sitting in traffic would be a horrific way to spend a half hour. So he leaves before the games are over and solves that problem, anyhow….
