A Marathon of a Weekend

by bren on April 20th, 2009 | No Comments »

national anthem @ the gardenJust in case you have not heard, the weekend of April 18 is known as Boston’s Marathon Weekend.  There are conventions all weekend where the runners will get there bag of “goodies” and of course their numbers for the race. The streets of Boylston, Newbury, and of course Lansdown St. are just mobbed with people. If you have to drive into the city of Boston I really do feel bad for you. It makes for quite an exciting sports filled weekend.
If Boston is so lucky, as they are this year, the Red Sox have a home series where they acknowledge the runners, the Celtics are in the playoffs, and have home games as well, and last but not least the Bruins are also making a championship run.

Boston Celtics and Red Sox games on Marathon Weekend 4/18/09I was fortunate enough myself that I was able to go the Celtics game at 12:30 pm and also meet up with my friend for a pre-game meal and a Red Sox game. The pre-game meal was an event for John Hancock employees who would be running in the Boston Marathon on April 20th. My friend is one of those employees and he was nice enough to invite me to the festivities.

With the Celtics game going into overtime I was starting to worry about making the second event on time. Celtics in overtime though, of course I am staying until the end. I am not my Grandfather who happened to leave a certain Boston College game before the end, yeah he missed the Hail Mary Pass by Doug Flutie.  My Grandmother, to this day, still hates him for that. You have to understand my Grandfather though, the man can never sit still and sitting in traffic would be a horrific way to spend a half hour. So he leaves before the games are over and solves that problem, anyhow….

Perfect Trifecta

This can be the type of thing you would think of hearing out of a Batman and Robin movie as an expression. “Holy Trifecta Batman, The UCONN Women’s team is unbeatable. Somebody needs to stop them!” YouTube Preview Image

Unfortunately for their competition, Robin nobody could for three different seasons. This past season marked the Third time in a five year span that the University of Connecticut’s Women’s basketball team captured a Championship without loosing a single game1.

Talk a program running the table on its competition. I think it is fair to say that the coaching staff has done quite a fantastic job over these past few years2. When you are able to go undefeated in any sport, you have to have a certain mindset and someone who can continue to keep the players focused on their ultimate goal.

Sweet Carolina

by bren on April 7th, 2009 | No Comments »

One of the best Tournaments in College Basketball has commenced with the North Carolina Tar Heels standing alone at the top. It is safe to say that the Heels had the pedal to the floor from the beginning to the end of the game.

North Carolina started off the game with a tremendous 22-7 run and never looked back. It was as if the Tar Heels, who were ranked as the nations #1 team to start the season1 , wanted to prove that they truly were the best team in the nation and could live up to the hype2 from the beginning of the season.

To win this Championship is a great accomplishment because of the win or go home arrangement. Congratulations to the Tar Heels.

No Mass for Lobo

Rebecca Lobo’s Massachusetts girl’s basketball state scoring record was broken on Jan. 26th. The girl who possesses the record now goes by the name of Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir1. She attends New Leadership Charter School in Springfield and has been on a scoring rampage since the 8th grade. The new record stands at 2,736 after a 28 point scoring effort by Abdul-Qaadir. One thing is for sure, she is certainly not done scoring for the rest of the season. New Leadership has five more games remaining on the season2 and Abdul-Qaadir will be looking to add to her total.
