Hometown Wears Crown

by bren on June 14th, 2009 | No Comments »

For the first time in the school’s history, Abington High School won the Division 3 State Baseball Title1. While there were many other teams playing that day, Plymouth North vs Auburn2 & BC High vs St. John’s3, this one was closer to home for myself.  I was unfortunately unable to go, cousin’s graduation party which was pretty good also, but I am glad to read about how my home town was able to pull off a state title. I just think anytime you as a young player are in that situation, it is a very cool thing. How many times do you get to play in a Major League facility for a State Title.

Congratulations to BC High and Auburn for also winning State Titles.

College All-Star Game and High School Tournament GameThis time of the year is just simply spectacular. You can check out local High School Tournament1, Watch or attend a College World Series Game2, take in a College All-Star Game,  or watch your children play little league. The list can go on and on. As the summer goes on and on more and more baseball events will be underway.

This is what I enjoy doing. Traveling around Massachusetts to stop at local sporting events, especially baseball. The best place I went to last summer was no doubt the Cape Cod League’s All-Star game. The game had everything; a home run derby during the day and the game later that night. What more can you ask for?

Wood Tourney’s Be Good?

by bren on May 31st, 2009 | No Comments »

With the start of the College World Series1 and High School Tournaments2 across the nation, the topic that usually comes up is why do these kids not use wooden bats? It does make  sense that Major League caliber player’s should be using wooden bats.

Here are my reasons for why Colleges or Larger High Schools should:

  • College players would need less time to adjust to the minor leagues by using them.
  • Less likely to have an injuries due to the speed of the baseball coming off the bats.
  • The fielders can adjust to the sound and also speed of the balls being hit.
  • A pitcher would have an advantage of hitter’s not getting so many cheap hits or home runs. This also gives a pitcher a better feel for how to pitch batters inside and out. Allowing them to develop pitches they would normally stay away from throwing.

You Got Rondeau’d

by bren on May 31st, 2009 | No Comments »

I had the pleasure of meeting a championship boxer/kick-boxer by the name of Christina Rondeau. at a casting call for a movie called The Fighter. Unbeknown to me she is owner of Rondeau Kickboxing in Johnston, Rhode Island.  She has traveled around the world, been a champion in and out of the boxing ring. She has started a foundation called The Elements of Staying Safe. I will have to pick up some tickets to see her fight at Mohegan Sun Casino when she has her next bout. I admire how much she has accomplished and continues to accomplish as an athlete and a person. I have a fasination with boxing so I thought it was pretty cool to meet someone of her status. I just hope to never catch a right cross from her so I will be sure to stay on her good side. Oh yeah and check out The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale when it comes out in 2011, you may see me in the background.

Curtains for JVer’s

This Sunday was the last game of the season. As odd as it was to have a game on Sunday in the midst of the Memorial Day weekend, the kids were ready to play. During the game I felt as though this would go down as one of their best performances of the year. Unfortunately Mother Nature did not want to see the game play out all seven innings.

The thing I enjoyed the most about the last game, was the additutde of the players. They seemed to “care” when they took infield and outfield. If someone made a mistake they would let that person know about it. While you may say, “that’s terrible, they should not be harping on their teammates for committing errors.” Considering how many errors were made at the beginning of the season and none of them would care, this is a good thing.
