Now is the time when football starts back up again for real. All the college games are on all day Saturday so if your looking for something to watch, you can’t really go wrong there. I can’t help but feel at a loss though. My alma matta Northeastern cut its football program last year. So now when I look in the paper under local college games I won’t see any more Northeastern reports. I guess it doesn’t change much since the team has not been good for quite some time but you still like to follow your teams progress. See how the young guys are doing and if they are able to upset a team here and there.
Like I said it does not change all that much, I went to 1 game during my 4 years there. I think many other students might have the same attendance record. When the field is located off campus it does take away some of the excitement around going to a game. Well that is why there is more than one sport to follow, time for some Hockey I guess.
The Boston Red Sox have been doing this for years and it is one of the greatest things a baseball team can do for their community. In hosting the Radio-Telethon, the Red Sox have manage to raise millions of dollars over the past years that is donated to cancer research. So pick up the phone, click on your computer and make a donation to the Jimmy Fund.
For 25 years the Closed Open has been fund raising money for the Jimmy Fund cancer research. My Uncles and Father have been donating to a cause that has effected them personally on many levels. The Thomas family was dealt a tough blow in 1982 as a member of their family was diagnosed and eventually passed away from cancer. Cancer also affected another member of the family but he was very fortunate to survive. After a quarter of a century they turned in quite a spectacular ending to the event that has touched many lives.
It is not an easy task to be dedicated to an event such as this for so long. There is a lot of behind the scenes work of making sure volunteers can help, generating sponsors for the holes and also recruiting new/veteran players each year. It has been nice to participate and see how they have been able to organize such a successful event each and every year. Growing up it was like the event would never end. They might have gone on for another 25 years but there does come a time when all things must come to an end. I am just glad I was able to contribute to helping develop a cure for this ever evolving disease.
This past weekend started up what will surely be an interesting match up between these two teams. They have 6 more games against each other after today’s game and Boston is 5 games behind the Yankees who are in first place.
I do not know how the people who schedule games do it but I think they figure to leave these games for the last of the season. Reason being, the A.L East title most likely comes down to these two teams battling for it (other than the new Rays powerhouse).
Being a Boston fan you can become spoiled with it a bit. Your team for the past decade has put out a competitive team each and every year and you expect nothing but the best from them. It seems as though with all the games played between these two teams it gets dulled down so much. I think that with the amount of games in the short amount of time they play each other, it is somewhat unfair to the players. I mean how many times can you play someone each year before they pick up on every little thing you do as a player. I think giving them less games against each other increases the intensity and importance of the games.
The networks are just looking for drama as well as MLB and want to put these clubs together as much as possible because of the ratings. I think it ends up making things a bit watered down and less intense.
