Its the postseason and like the title says this is what separates the men from the boys. I can not wait to watch some of the match ups for this year even though the Red Sox didn’t make the playoffs. We have a Reds team that hasn’t been to the playoffs in 15 years and also a Rays team who was become a force to be reckoned with the past few years. There are many questions out there like will the Twins finally get past the Yankees? It might be unlikely since their big bat in Morneau is out for the series but that will be interesting to watch. The only way to really know what happens is to watch. So i’ll see you on the couch as we enjoy these MLB playoffs.
I know I have been slacking a little bit on the blog but no more excuses. I read this in the paper yesterday and I think it awesome one of Abington’s own is making a big for a roster spot on an NHL squad, Florida Panthers. I actually had the pleasure of winning a championship with him in little league, the good ‘ol days. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy also so best of luck Joe, I will be waiting to buy that jersey.
I watched this bit on 60 minutes about how the American Samoan’s have 56% better chances of making it to the NFL. It was actually a really good piece that explained how the players are trained and just how their way of life on the island helps them be better football players in general.
I think that this is what we need to see more in sports, culture. Today’s sports just have you do the warm ups and if your good enough to play then you are one of the lucky ones. On the Samoan island they teach everyone how to play. The key word being teach. They want these boys to succeed so they give them the proper skills to succeed without having the greatest tools at their disposal. What the players learn is how to play by using what their culture has taught them and also sheer skill as well.
This is something that is lost a lot here in the States. Basically if your kid is good enough to play then he will play but the coaches do not teach as much as they should. Some get frustrated and other figure that the kid will never get it so why waste the time. Well when you teach someone how to play the game, they will gain more than just skill. The emphasis on winning has killed a lot of what sports is really about, self-improvement. I hope to see that change in the coming years as this becomes more obvious.
I must say after all the training I did last year to not be able to run in the race I was training for was disappointing. Yesterday I ran in the Jeffery Combs Memorial Run/Walk in Abington. I am so hooked on racing!!! I really thought my friends were crazy when they said that running in a race was really fun. How can running be fun? I do it to stay in shape mostly and have stuck with my “program” so things are going well. Running and fun weren’t really used in the same sentence with me.
Well I totally see a difference after my first 5k. I enjoyed the competition, anticipation and everything else that goes with it. Most of all I enjoyed contributing to the Foundation of Jeffery Combs. His wife has so much love and compassion for people who have helped her throughout the years, how could you not enjoy contributing. Many people lost so many loved ones back on September 11th and it can be so hard for them because of the nature of how everything happened. So to make this woman shed happy tears in memory of her husband is something that a town has come to enjoy each and every year.
So yes the running went really really well but it was more important that I was able to contribute to this foundation in a personal way. Now it is on to the next race this weekend so don’t fail me now feet.
