Playing To Your Competition

As I was watching the Celtics at the Garden last night, lets not toot my own horn or anything, my friends and I were talking about the game. We came to the conclusion that this year the Celtics have succumbed to playing to their competition. Meaning that they only play has hard as they have to when they have to. Case in point is last nights victory over the Washington Wizards.

In the fourth quarter my friend and I looked at each other and said “How are we down 13 to the Wizards??” The Wizards have been good lately but they are not as good as the Celtics by any means. Up until that point the Celtics had been making sloppy passes and playing a very soft defense. There must have been 6 or 7 times when the guard would drive to the lane, bring the defenders and pass it off to the big man standing behind the defense. Zero help defense whatsoever.

In the fourth quarter things started to change with 5 minutes left. The defense was causing turnovers and the offense turned it up a notch. Ray Allen got his shot going, thankfully, and bailed out the offense in a lot of ways. My whole point is that with 5 minutes left the Celtics came to play. Having said that 5 minutes is not enough time to make a comeback all the time, you have to play like there is 5 minutes left at the tip off. Otherwise you let the other team dictate how the game will turn out and you may loose by 2 or 3 points because it was to little to late. Play up to your ability all the time and do not worry about what the other players, teammates or coach might say. Your coach will love you for it and I guarantee your teammates won’t mind either.

USA Hockey

Watching the finals game earlier this afternoon I was hoping it might have turned out something like this:

Could have been the similar scenario with a shootout if we could have made through the overtime period. I am a little disappointed but this is coming from a bandwagon hockey fan. Don’t get me wrong folk I enjoy hockey but I have never been a huge fan, couldn’t even explain why.

Following the past few USA games has renewed my interest in the game. The past Olympic games have in a sense restored my enjoyment for hockey. Of course when you watch these games you have that sense of pride for your country as they attempt to win gold. I think the competition in this years Olympics gave all hockey fans alike a renewed sense of how intense the games can be. I hope this does translate into more interest in hockey in general. To tell you the truth, the players have games every other night on top of traveling across country while they are taking a beating each and every night they suit up. True Blue Collar Sport that is for sure.

Do You Believe In Miracles?

30 years ago on Monday will be the Anniversary of “The Miracle On Ice.” This is a nice video that gives the back story as to why this game was such a huge deal.

It was one of those games that gave a Nation something to cheer about in a such a gloomy time. The people of the U.S were able to look back on the game to forget the present problems. It was that type of win though, one that just re-energized an entire Nation so to speak.

It is also one of those games that just goes to show people what sports is all about. David vs. Goliath, a team able to defy the odds and share a common belief that they could defeat the hockey power house of recent years. Despite being smaller, less talented and less experienced they were able to pull off well.. A Miracle.

Pierce Was On The Money

My first thought when I heard that Paul Pierce would be in the three point contest was this.  Well he certainly shoots enough during the season so hopefully he doesn’t end up like Antoine Walker (fast forward a lil bit here):

Well he didn’t, thank goodness, he advanced to the final round and it went a little something like this:

The first Boston Celtic to win the competition since Larry Bird back in 1988:

Congrats Paul, as if your actually reading this but its the thought that counts. The only really good contest that still exists on All Star Weekend.

Happy Valentines Day everyone.

Super Bowl Preview; Just Enough To Wet Your Whistle

Players from the Saints and Colts talk about being in the Super Bowl1:

I really hope that the game stays close throughout. I mean that is what we all want, watch some funny commercials, spend time with our friends/family and also be caught up in the game itself. It just makes for a better viewing experience all around.

What the Super Bowl is all about is more along the same lines as Christmas. When you think about it, its all about spending time with your friends to relax for the afternoon. No worries just good old fashioned laziness and nothing can beat that.

As for my prediction; Colts think they can beat them Saints but I think the Saints get a late score to come away with the W.
